In this piece for Khaleej Times, our founder, Jan Gerber, reflects on the quiet dangers of using AI as a substitute for genuine connection.
When a chatbot always listens, never disagrees, and responds just as we need it to, we must ask: Are we seeking support or avoiding the discomfort of being truly seen?
What begins as a helpful tool can gradually evolve into something entirely different. In the clinic, we’ve seen how these interactions can reinforce distorted beliefs, even contribute to psychotic breaks. But the deeper concern is more universal. When technology mirrors us too perfectly, it can strip away the very tension that gives human relationships their meaning.
Real intimacy is inconvenient. It challenges, interrupts, and surprises. That’s what makes it real.
When we trade that for frictionless affirmation, we may feel comforted, but we also risk losing touch with what it means to be fully human.
